Baby Harp Seal

Although Robert Lyn Nelson’s work has come to be the very image of Hawaii it must be noted that throughout his long career he has explored many different environments and the creatures that call them home.  In “Baby Harp Seal” Robert gives us a portrait of one of the one of the most endearing animals of the far north.  Also known as the Saddleback Seal, the Harp seal wears a coat uniquely designed to camouflage it from the many predators that is must avoid in its frozen home.  In this wonderful painting we see again the excellent understanding of light that Robert brings to all his work.  Here, the soft arctic sun upon the ice creates an alien scene very different from the tropical land of Hawaii but equally beautiful in its own special way.
