An Underwater Congress is perhaps Robert’s best loved painting of a green sea turtle.At home on his adopted island of Maui Robert would frequently swim out from his beach-front house to meet the family of turtles that were his neighbors.While almost all of Robert’s sea creatures seem to possess very definite personalities this wise old man of the ocean is particularly noteworthy.It appears as though he has called a meeting of the other reef dwellers and is about to preside over his own “Underwater Congress”.

In this unique work Robert has taken a moment away from the humpbacks and great blue whales to picture their Northern cousins, the Beluga.These small whales (three to five meters) are to be found in the arctic and sub-arctic water of the Northern Hemisphere.Born gray, they mature into the white ice dwellers that we see here.Robert’s use of light in all his works is remarkable.In this painting he has changed his palate entirely from the greens and yellows of Hawaii to the crystal cold hues of the land of the midnight sun.

"Twenty-six miles across the sea…..” begins the old song about Catalina Island, the “Island of Romance”. One of the Channel Islands, Catalina has long been a playground for Southern Californians looking for a tropical getaway close to home. Famous as the estate of the chewing gum millionaire William Wrigley, Catalina’s most famous landmark is its famous casino and its equally famous Avalon theatre.In Catalina summer Seas Robert has pictured the island getaway on a beautiful summer afternoon.This is another of Robert’s unique and rare triptychs, (three images framed as one).The format enables the artist to capture the panoramic view of this carefree island and of the colorful marine life off its shores.You might note that in the foreground of the painting swims a school of Garibaldi, the bright orange fish that is the official fish of the Golden State.

Local Maui residents and long time visitors to Maui remember a legendary island restaurant just South of Lahaina in the tiny town of Olowalu.Back when Maui offered very few fine dining experiences Chez Paul offered both classical French food and a bit of glamour.On any given night you might run into local high school seniors celebrating graduation with the meal of a lifetime, or Hollywood celebrities enjoying the casual elegance that the island of Maui was once famous for.Olowalu itself was a place of legend.The valley that began here was the site of some of the fiercest battles waged by King Kamehameha as he sought to unify his kingdom.Even today legend has it that the ghosts of the fallen warriors, the legendary “night walkers” can still be heard on their nightly marches.Sadly, Chez Paul closed its doors in 2009 and now the ghosts of romantic evenings of champagne and laughter are all that is left of this famous Olowalu hideaway.

When Robert Lyn Nelson created his classic painting “Two Worlds” he not only created a new form of art but also immortalized the classic view of the Lahaina waterfront that now has come to be the iconic image of Maui throughout the world.Cradle of Life pictures a family of humpbacks as they frolic off the coast of the old Hawaiian whaling town.Along the shore we see the lighthouse, the old Pioneer Hotel and the restored whaling ship, the Carthaginian.The Carthaginian now lies beneath the waves of Lahaina harbor and can only be visited by the submarine tours that leave each day from this fabled dock, but the classic image of old Maui still lures millions of visitors each year.Some years ago the Maui Visitors Bureau adopted Cradle of Life as the image to represent the island throughout the world.
