Robert gives us another painting of Mt. Shasta. Actually, Mount Shasta consists of four overlapping volcanic cones. It has perhaps been only two hundred years since the last eruption of Mt. Shasta so the mountain is very much a living thing. The artist seems to capture the essence of this ever changing mountain in the reflected sunlight of the early morning. Native Americans believe that the spirit chief Skell descend from heaven to live on the peak of Mt. Shasta. It is easy to see why he would choose this heavenly place for his home.

Please refer to "The Emperors" for example of framing on this piece.
“The Casual Visitor” is one of Robert’s famous sgraffito drawings.Commonly called scratchboards, these intricate compositions are created by first covering a white surface with black ink and then scratching through the ink to reveal the white below. It is obviously a painstaking and quite unforgiving process.Since Rtobert’s paintings are so colorful, his mastery of line can sometimes be overlooked. In this portrait of a sea otter one can see every bit of fur, carefullly crought to life with the engraving tools that the artist uses to litterally scratch out hhis image.

The Emperor is the largest and tallest of all pengion species that inhabit the antarctic wilderness. It is the only member of its species that breeds during the arctic winter and is perhaps best know for its migratory journeys.A number of recent films have made the penguin the star of the frozen south. In this painting we see three emperors who are perhaps about to embark on one of their arduou journeys.Highlight in the beautiful arctic light they seem to be ready for their adventure. This is one of Robert’s most successful non-Hawaiian works.

Just off the shore of Napili is a sandy bottomed stretch of beach which the locals call TurtleTown. Here, a colony of sea turtles has claimed the territory for their own but are very generous with sharing their waters with other sea creatures and even the occasional snorkeling artist.Robert has spent many hours with the inhabitants of TurtleTown and in this image he shares the experience of floating weightlessly above the sandy ocean floor on a sparkling Maui afternoon.

If it were necessary to explain to anyone what is meant by “modern marine art”, this painting could serve as a perfect example. Since Robert Lyn Nelson first created the “Two World’s” genre in the late seventies artists everywhere have used elements of his work.A classic view of Lahaina, this rare triptych has everything a Nelson collector could ask for; breaching humpbacks, colorful coral reefs, and a gorgeous view of Lahaina from out at sea looking toward the West Maui mountains. If you have ever been there on a day like this, the painting will make you dream of going back.If you have never been to the Valley Isle, then it will make you want to see for yourself if anywhere can be that truly beautiful. The answer from those of us who love Maui; “Yes it can.” Shipping and handling charges separate. The Monterey Cypress onced thrived throughout central California. As cities have grown the forests have diminished so that now only two small forests remain near Monterey and Carmel. These beautiful trees, shaped by the constant sea winds olong the central coast have become a virtual symbol of Monterey. In this painting Robert Lyn Nelson gives us a classic view of one of these stately beauties.Perhaps the best know of all California trees, the “Lone Cyrpress”has literally becoma the trademark of the Pebble Beach Company. Some years ago, the company attempted to prevent artists and photographers from depicting this tree, siting copyright law.In a typical artistic response, local artists staged a show featuring nothing but pictures of the tree.Common sense prevailed and the cypress as well as the sunset and all of nature’s other beauties remain free for all to enjoy and to be inspired by.
